Muthira Thoran

Muthira thoran is a quick to make thoran as it does not involve much cutting. Muthira or horse gram has a host of nutritional benefits.

It is high in protein and iron. It is considered helpful for iron deficiencies and for maintaining body temperature in the winter season. In certain parts of South India, muthira is said to help in weight loss.

Soaking of muthira is generally done to reduce the cooking time. I generally soak it overnight.

  • 1/2 cup grated coconut
  • 1 chopped tomato (optional, I usually add it for the flavour)

  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 2 cups water
  • curry leaves
  • salt
  • oil

Method

Wash and soak the muthira overnight. If you cannot soak it before hand, then you can roast it for 5 – 6 minutes and keep aside.

Add the muthira along with 2 cups water to a pressure cooker. You can also add a pinch of turmeric. Cook it for 5 – 6 whistles or 15 minutes. Add salt to taste to it and keep aside.

Heat oil in a pan. Sputter the mustard seeds. Then add curry leaves, chopped onion / crushed small onions, crushed garlic and saute till onions change color. Add the grated coconut and red chillies. Stir fry for 5 minutes.

Then add the turmeric, chilli and coriander powders and mix well. Add the chopped tomato and stir fry till oil appears or another 5 minutes.

Drain the excess water from the muthira and add the cooked muthira to the pan and mix well.

Serve hot with rice.
