Dal and rice

Dal Tadka

One of the staple dishes in Indian cuisine. It is delicious and wholesome and one of my favourites.

  • 1 cup tur dal
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 chopped onion
  • 1 small chopped tomato
  • 1 teaspoon crushed ginger
  • 1 teaspoon crushed garlic
  • 2 chopped green chillies
  • curry leaves
  • 1 teaspoon chilli powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • salt
  • oil
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon jeera
  • 1/2 teaspoon ghee
  • coriander leaves for garnishing

Clean and soak the dal for 10 – 20 minutes.

Pressure cook the dal for 3 whistles or slow cook in pan for 20 minutes till dal is cooked

Heat oil in pan and sputter mustard seeds and jeera. Add chopped onions and saute till soft. Add crushed ginger and garlic and stir for 2 minutes.

Add curry leaves and green chillies and stir for a minute. Add the chilli and turmeric powders and stir for a minute. Add the chopped tomato and saute till oil starts appearing or 3 minutes.

Add the cooked dal and mix thoroughly. Simmer for 2 minutes. Garnish with ghee and coriander leaves.

Serve hot with rice.
